Bryan-College Station, TX – May 23, 2024 – Twin City Toucans FC opened up its 2024 USL League Two season with a win tonight against Hill Country Lobos 3-2 in front of a rowdy opening night crowd at Edible Field.
The Toucans came out of the gates early with a goal from Isaak Torossian off of a spectacular feed from Luke Mulkey, the Plano, Texas native to make it 1-0 early in the first half. The Toucans would add to their lead later in the half with a brilliant finish from Rhys Shirley off of another feed from Mulkey to make it 2-0.
As the half ended, it was goalkeeper Tristan Whitlock who stepped up big, stopping a penalty shot in stoppage time from Lobos forward Raymundo Aguirre to keep the score at 2-0 Toucans at the halftime break.
In the second half, the Toucans added to their lead with a goal off of a set piece scored by Luke Mulkey who was the recipient of an excellent corner feed from Vilius Labutis.
But the Lobos were able to stage a comeback effort as Michael Quintanilla was finally able to capitalize on a penalty kick against Whitlock to make the score 3-1 Toucans. Then it was Quintanilla again in stoppage time burying a shot off of a deflection in the box to cut the Toucan’s lead to just a single goal.
However, the Lobos comeback effort came up short, and the hometown team was able to begin the season with a thrilling 3-2 victory. The Toucans are back in action on the road this Sunday, May 26th against AC Houston Sur, and return home to Edible Field on Wednesday, May 29th against Corpus Christi FC.
